Oskaloosa, Iowa – If you had a chance to live life over, what would you do differently?

That was the question posed to those attending the Discover Your Purpose workshop held Thursday at New Hope Community Center, or the old Jefferson Elementary school building.

The workshop was designed for work sites that are working towards becoming a Blue Zones Work Site or work sites that have already been designated as Blue Zones Work Sites. “Then we realized that it would be a great opportunity to invite the public to participate in a free purpose workshop,” said Miranda Cummings, one of the Oskaloosa Blue Zones staff members.

The Finding Your Purpose workshop is a two-hour event designed to help people begin the journey of discovery of their purpose. It was developed by Healthways® and The Inventure Group, whose founder and renowned executive educator, Richard Leider, and president, Barbara Hoese, have helped thousands of people lead and live with purpose and passion.

Sarah Young, a member of the Purpose Committee in the Cedar Rapids Blue Zones project is a trained facilitator of the Purpose workshops. As a leadership coach and trainer, much of the work she does is rooted in the organization Purpose. Finding purpose in our work, purpose in our relationship, purpose in our words, and purpose in our lives, Sarah knew right away that she had to get involved in Purpose through the Blue Zones Project.

“By the end of the two hour workshop you’ll have a more clear and conscience understanding of what your purpose is, what your strengths are and how you can utilize those in the workplace or in your day-to-day lifestyle,” said Cummings.

In Oskaloosa, the Blue Zone project officially kicked off in the middle of April in 2014. During that time, the sometimes controversial initiative has worked with area businesses and government on plans to make Oskaloosa a Blue Zones Community.

Cummings said that, so far, the Blue Zones Project in Oskaloosa has “reached a lot of our milestones”. Cummings said that some of those were “low-hanging fruit”, items that are believed to be things the community would want to participate in.

“So far, we’ve been moving right along, as far as our goals and milestones are considered,” said Cummings. The Blue Zones Project in Oskaloosa still wants to see community gardens be a success in the community. Another goal is the bicycle master plan for the community, “something that is right for the citizens, but something that the local government can agree on.”

Recently, Grate Expectations and TD&T were just a couple of the newest work sites to become Blue Zones Certified. Other area businesses, like Imagine the Possibilities and Mahaska, are in the process of becoming Blue Zones certified.

The Blue Zones Project in Oskaloosa will enter its sustainability mode at the end of July. “So the way we look at it, it will never completely wrap up, but maybe just take more of a back-seat as far as pushing towards milestones and goals,” said Cummings.

The hope for the Blue Zone Project is that, even if in 5 years, there will still be walking groups, even if they aren’t the current ‘Walking Moai’s’; that the culture of change will still be evident in the community.
