Moore Leads Oskaloosa to Buzzer Beater Victory Over Cardinals 48-46.

Sophomore Jack Moore is what you would call in the zone. Moore was on fire again Friday night as he helped lead the Indians to an exciting Little Hawkeye Conference victory over the Newton Cardinals on a last second shot, giving the Indians the win 48-46.

Oskaloosa knew coming into the game they were going to have their hands full trying to stop the quickness and 3 point shooting of the visitors, to name one Tyler Wood, who was leading the conference in 3’s and free throw percentages. Oskaloosa managed to keep the Newton senior in check for the majority of the game, but he was able to keep his Cardinals in the game.

Osky opened the game as freshman Tanner DeKock hit one of his patented baseline jumpers and senior Ki-Jana DeJong drove for back-to-back lay ups. Fellow senior Ryan Reiter hit a 8 ft. bank shot and the Indians led 8-0. Newton finally got on the board but Oskaloosa had the answer as DeJong drove the lane again and junior Wade Votroubek drilled a 12 ft. jumper. With that, the Indians were off to the fast start they were looking for. Newton drained a long 3 pointer, but that was answered by senior Max Johnson who put back his own miss. After that play, the Indian crowd was just beginning to turn up the volume. Early indications showed that this match-up was going to be a Little Hawkeye Conference instant classic, as the Indians led 14-9 after one quarter.

The Indians quickly realized that the Cardinals were not going away, as Newton continued to harass the Indians with pressure. The Cardinals also started to heat up from long distance, as they drained several 3’s. Moore took it upon himself to get the Indians offense going again. He drained a 15ft. jumper, then nailed a long lady luck 3 pointer that he banked in as DeKock sandwiched in another jumper from the elbow. Oskaloosa trailed 27-25 as the halftime horn sounded.

Starting the third quarter, Reiter came out and hit a 14 ft. jumper followed by a little turn around shot. With that, Oskaloosa jumped back ahead of Newton 29-27. DeKock was finding the elbow jumper to his liking, so he drained another one to increase Osky’s lead 33-27.

Oskaloosa continued to work their offense when Moore was fouled on an open 3 pointer. Moore earned the three points the hard way, sinking three shots from the charity stripe. The Indians led 36-29.

The pace was picking up for both teams. Oskaloosa found Votroubek going towards the hoop and finishing with a layup, spreading the lead to 38-29. Newton looked for help from their leader, Wood, and they found it. At the close of the quarter he was fouled on a 3 pointer and cashed in on all of the free throws, drawing the Cards to within 38-32 at the end of three quarters.

The Cardinals turned up the pressure another notch and caused some turnovers. The Cardinals used those mistakes to make some clutch baskets, drawing the score to within 1 at 38-37.

Moore was fouled and nailed both free throws, Putting the score up to 40-37. Newton caused two more steals to take the lead at 43-40. Moore once again went back to the line and hit both, setting up a great last 3 minutes with Oskaloosa trailing 43-42.

Newton tried to milk some time off of the clock for a couple minutes but ‘Mr. Everything’ Moore pressured and stole the ball for the layup and Oskaloosa was up 44-43.

Newton answered back with a layup and then Reiter knocked down two free throws to go ahead 46-45. Newton hit one of two free throws to notch the score at 46-46 with 3.5 seconds left in the game. Oskaloosa Head Coach Ryan Parker called a time out and drew up, what turned out to be, a thing of beauty as Moore came off a screen with a Cardinal defender in his face, and launched a shot that touched nothing but net. The Oskaloosa crowd exploded as the Indians won on the buzzer beater 48-46.

Osky was led by Moore with 20 pts. and 3 rebs., Reiter with 8 pts. and 15 rebs., Dekock with 8 pts. and 5 Rebs., and DeJong with 6 pts. and 6 rebs. Osky had 15 assist on their 19 made field goals to complete the great team effort.

Oskaloosa is now 4-4 on the season and will travel to Norwalk to take on the Warriors Tuesday night in Little Hawkeye Conference action.
