Speed Kills As Osky Boys Fall To Knoxville 65-43

The Oskaloosa Indians Varsity Basketball team made a game of it until the 4th quarter Friday night.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Everyone was riding high from Monday night’s thrilling win over Fairfield. The Oskaloosa High School gym was packed Friday night for the game against the Knoxville Panthers, in hopes of seeing the boys get off to a 2-0 start. What they got was a Knoxville team that has a ton of speed, which caused the Indians major fits.

The Osky boys found the pressure and the rough play not to their liking. They found early foul trouble and couldn’t take care of the basketball, as they turned the ball over time-and-time again.

Junior Wade Votroubek came off the bench to get the first basket for the Indians, but that was momentum that was quickly taken away as the Panthers struck from the outside.

Knoxville had numerous looks at 3’s and worked a slashing style to get easy baskets underneath, which flustered the Indians. Layups by Sophomore Jack Moore and Senior Ryan Ryder tried to keep the Panthers within striking distance. The quarter closed with Knoxville leading 17-9.

Oskaloosa began the second quarter continuing to struggle with turnovers as the 4 guard system of the Panthers seemed to do what they wanted, when they wanted. The Indians only scored 6 points in the quarter as Knoxville also struggled slightly, but managed to stretch the lead to 15 as they went into halftime leading Oskaloosa 30-15.

Oskaloosa was as cold as the weather outside, as they couldn’t string anything together.

Coming out of halftime, the Indians looked to try and compete in the second half, and for the third quarter they did just that.  Moore and Ryder hit jumpers and freshman Tanner DeKock got into the scoring books as he hit a baseline jumper to draw the Indians to within 8 points with the score being 39-31.

That, unfortunately, is as close as the Indians would get as they had no answer on defense for Knoxville. The Panther’s speed seemed to keep the Indians off balance as the ball movement by the Panthers kept Oskaloosa scrambling. Knoxville finished off the Indians from inside the paint and beyond the 3 point arch.  The Panthers took advantage of Oskaloosa in the late run and didn’t look back, as they notched up the easy 65-43 win.

Leading the Indians was Ryder with 12 pts. 4 rebs. and 2 asst., Moore had 10 pts. and 3 asst., DeKock added 8 pts. 3 rebs. and 2 asst. Votroubek with 6 pts. 8 rebs. 4 blks. And 2 asst. and Senior Max Johnson 6 pts. and 2 asst.

Oskaloosa is now 1-1 on the season and they will host the Centerville Big Red on Tuesday.
