Oskaloosa, Iowa – Veterans Day around the United States brings a groundswell of appreciation for those who have served our country in the armed forces. Young and old alike come together to share meals, share stories and remember those who have gone before.

One Oskaloosa area girl has had a desire to share her talent making quits with those who have served.

On Tuesday, the Oskaloosa American Legion joined the VFW at the VFW post to honor the day. Along with the speeches and meal came a quit raffle, where the Mahaska Stitch n’ Quilt Guild donated 22 quilts to veterans. This was their second year of the project. The veterans received raffle tickets as they arrived on Tuesday. The numbers were drawn and a vet was presented with the quilt. Some quilts found their way to care facilities for those vets unable to make the ceremony.

Cierra is already working on finishing up her latest quilt, and she’s not sure, at the moment, where that one will also be donated. “I’ve never kept any of them for myself,” Cierra said of the quits she has made.

You could say that quilting runs in the blood, as she picked up the knack from her grandmother. She wanted to thank her two brothers for their service, one serves in the Marines and the other in the Navy.
