Winterset, Iowa – The Oskaloosa Indians Football team made the trek west of I-35 in search of a season opening win. After leading most of the game, a late score by Winterset, coupled with the PAT, sealed the win for the Winterset Huskies 15-14 over the Indians in a non-conference match-up.

“We knew that it was going to be a dog fight. That’s just the way Winterset is,” said Indians Head Coach Mike Sterner. “They are a very fine coached team.”

The Huskies ran the ball, and “nothing surprised us,” said Sterner. “We’ve got to continue to get better.”

The coaches and players will be reviewing the film to better understand what went right and what went wrong.

“We’ve obviously got to take care of our bodies better. We had a lot of guys out there with cramps, so we’ve got to solve that problem,” said Sterner.

“We were one dive play away from winning that football game and, really, one good tackle from stopping them from scoring,” Sterner added. “Sometimes the scoreboard doesn’t show how well you did.”

The second quarter had Oskaloosa and Winterset trading touchdowns, with Nate Van Veldhuizen leading the Indians to the first score with 7:28 remaining in the half. Van Veldhuizen finished off the touchdown with the PAT run to put Oskaloosa up 8-0.

Jacob Larson answered for Winterset on an 8 yard run with 3:01 remaining in the half. Larson carried it in for the PAT and the score was tied up at 8-8.

Van Velduizen scored the second Oskaloosa touchdown by trucking down the field 63 yards. The pass from Joe Sterner for the PAT was no good and Oskaloosa led 14-8 with 10:02 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Jacob Larson once again answered the call for Winterset on a 61 yard dash into the end-zone with 3:21 remaining in the game. The PAT kick from Charles Woodcock was good and Winterset took the lead 15-14.
