Smith Places Third as Oskaloosa Competes at Fairfield Invitational

FAIRFIELD — Lane Smith finished third in 17:11 to lead the Oskaloosa boys cross country team at the Fairfield Invitational, where the Indians placed fifth in a closely contested team race.

Oskaloosa scored 104 points in the nine-team boys field, finishing just 12 points behind second place. The girls placed sixth among eight teams with 136 points.

Smith moved into the lead pack early and worked to stay with the front runners. Oskaloosa coach Mike Comfort called the effort one of Smith’s best races, praising his willingness to push himself against the leaders.

Micah Van Ee also earned praise from Comfort for a strong rebound performance. Kellen Kauzlarich stepped up as Oskaloosa’s fifth runner, helping complete the team’s scoring lineup.

With only 12 points separating the Indians from second place, Comfort said improving the finishes of the fourth and fifth runners will be an important part of the team’s progress.

Kate McBurney led the Oskaloosa girls, placing 40th in 23:48. Comfort said McBurney delivered another solid performance, while Hazel Adam made a strong contribution and Payton Clark ran well in her season debut.

The invitational was Oskaloosa’s second meet of the season. Comfort saw improvements but said the Indians are still working through some early-season adjustments.

His focus moving forward is consistent competition throughout each race and across the entire lineup. Comfort wants runners to maintain their effort from the first mile through the finish, with every team member contributing.

Oskaloosa returns to action Tuesday with its home invitational at Edmundson Park. Middle school races are scheduled for 4:15 p.m. and 4:40 p.m., followed by high school races at 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
