State Senator Liz Mathis of Robins has received the 2014 Friend of Community Action Award from the Iowa Community Action Association. Mathis was recognized for her consistent advocacy on behalf of children and families and specifically for her push to help low-income Iowans struggling with record high heating bills.

“During one of the coldest winters in state history, Senator Mathis led the Legislature’s effort to provide additional help to almost 100,000 Iowa families struggling to stay warm despite record propane prices,” said Lana Ross, Executive Director of the Iowa Community Action Association. “Helping our neighbors through tough times is an important Iowa value,” said Mathis.
The Iowa’s Community Action Agencies (ICAA) are locally-based private, non-profit organizations that work to increase opportunities for low-income Iowa children and
families struggling to meet their basic needs. The groups believe that all people can learn and respond when provided with opportunity for growth.

The Friend of Community Action Award was established in 2010 by the ICAA Board of Directors to honor individuals who have been champions for causes that benefit individuals and families served by the Iowa Community Action network. This year the board chose one Iowa policymaker to receive the award, Senator Liz Mathis.

After spending over 25 years as a journalist, Mathis has worked the last several years for Four Oaks, a child advocacy and juvenile justice agency.
