Breaking through for its first league title in school history, the William Penn women’s golf team claims stake to the #2 story from 2013-2014.

A program reinstated in the fall of 2008, the Statesmen improved season after season until finally raising their first-ever conference hardware on April 29.

After finishing second to rival Grand View in 2012-2013, WPU opened this past year with seven consecutive runner-up placings. The team’s first crown finally came on March 28 at the Graceland Invitational and the title run lasted for just over a month with its fifth-straight gold at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships.

With three of the top five scorers–highlighted by sophomore Demi Coertze’s medalist honor (80-78)–the Statesmen led by 17 strokes after the first day and more than doubled it by the end. WPU finished at 655 (324-331), while Grand View was a distant second at 691 (341-350).

With an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships in tow, the Statesmen went out to prove they belonged with the best and were successful in their pursuit. Entering as the #23 team in the land, the navy and gold showed little sign of being intimidated by finishing 15th overall (Coertze tied for 22nd) with rounds of 331, 327, 315, and 328.

Postseason accolades overflowed with junior Maggie Yang winning MCC Player of the Year laurels, while Coertze was also a first-team pick. Freshman Jing Yang earned an honorable mention as well. Coertze then notched the biggest award ever garnered by a William Penn linkster as she was named an NAIA Third-Team All-American.

#2 Performance of the 2013-2014 Year

Alec Schwab nearly broke one of the most impressive records at William Penn to collect the #2 performance of 2013-2014.

The junior men’s basketball player scored 43 points in a 100-81 win over Clarke on February 8. He hit 13 of his 28 field goals, including knocking down his first two shots–both three pointers–to open the afternoon.

In his first of two 40-point games in just over a month, Schwab was 9-for-20 from deep and 8-for-9 at the line to finish only six points shy of the program’s all-time best performance.

The eventual Midwest Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year, Schwab added six rebounds and one steal to his scoring effort, which included him putting up 25 points by halftime. He was named MCC Player of the Week for his showing that happened to be the fourth-highest tally ever.
