The kids were deep in the books last year as WPU’s academic success shines bright as the #5 story from 2013-2014.

A total of 79 academic all-Midwest Collegiate Conference honors were given out to Statesmen athletes, including nine to the men’s soccer team. To be eligible for the award, honorees must have completed at least two consecutive terms at their current institution, have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, and play in at least one varsity competition.

Four football players garnered academic all-Midwest League laurels to equate to the accolades their non-gridiron colleagues received. To be eligible to be on the team, athletes must be of at least junior academic standing, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or above on a 4.0 scale, and must be a varsity starter or key reserve player.

Led by three honorees from both the football and women’s soccer programs, William Penn notched 16 nods at the national level with NAIA Scholar-Athlete awards. To be eligible for the award, athletes must be of at least junior academic standing, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, and have attended the nominating institution for at least one full academic year.

Guiding the individual lists, though, were a pair of Edwards–Sydney and Alex (no relation)–as both took home recognition as part of the prestigious Capitol One CoSIDA Academic All-America program. Sydney was named to the District 3 squad for softball, while Alex made it to the next level, collecting Second-Team Academic All-America honors on the cross country/track and field list. To be eligible for the award, athletes must be of at least sophomore academic standing, be a starter or key reserve player (other playing requirements where applicable), maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or above on a 4.0 scale, and have attended the nominating institution for at least one full calendar year.

Finally, three navy and gold teams were strong across the board in academia. Women’s golf, softball, and men’s basketball will all be recognized as NAIA Scholar Teams later this summer. For a team to earn NAIA Scholar Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team GPA includes all eligible varsity student-athletes.

#5 Performance of the 2013-2014 Year

Cameron Foster showed why he was worthy of two All-American awards in bowling as he is the #5 performance of the season.

The senior was dominant in Sin City back in December, topping all 242 rollers in qualifying at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational. Paced by a high game of 290, Foster owned an average of 233.9 pins over nine games (2,105 pins overall). With eight of his games over 200 and five of those ahead of his 233.9 average, Foster won qualifying by 119 pins (13.2 average).

Behind Foster’s leadership, the Statesmen qualified fourth out of 33 teams. The navy and gold then got really hot in knockout play and ran the table, defeating the #13, #5, #9, and #3 seeds en route to the title.
