Scott Parks, 49, of Pella passed away Monday evening, July 7, 2014, at his home in Pella. Scott Lee Parks, son of Roger Lee and Dixie Lee (Carr) Parks, was born August 17, 1964, in Oskaloosa.
While in his senior year at Oskaloosa High School, Scott began the work study program at the Fareway Meat Department in Oskaloosa. After graduating in 1983, he continued to work at Fareway, entering into the Management Training Program. He was moved to Maquoketa, Tama/ Toledo, Altoona and Centerville stores, before being assigned as manager of the meat department in the Pella Fareway Store in 1999.
Scott married his high school sweetheart, Michelle Marie Erteld, June 14, 1986, at the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. Michelle and Scott were partners in the truest sense of the word. With the moves his career required, they were each other’s best friends and with the birth of their children, that circle of love only expanded.
Scott had three passions in life: his family, his job and hunting & fishing. Scott made it a priority to spend as much time with his family as possible. Each year the family took a trip to a favorite spot in Florida, where they enjoyed the sun and Scott could fish for the big ones.
The recent birth of his first grandchild was a special time for Scott. He recalled the special moments he cherished as a father for the first time with his first born, his daughter Holly.
Scott greatly valued his position at Fareway and enjoyed his work, he took pride in his meat counter and genuinely cared about the people that he trained. He considered himself their mentor, caring about their job performance as well as their personal lives.
Scott’s third passion, hunting and fishing, were activities he enjoyed from an early age, when his father first introduced him to the sport. Everywhere Scott lived he enjoyed hunting with his son, Caleb, and their home near Lake Red Rock provided them with opportunities to hunt almost out of their back door. Scott’s work provided him with the skills to process the game he harvested and he helped friends process their game. Scott gave a share of his meat away and also donated to the HUSH program.
Scott’s family includes his wife of 28 years, Michelle; his children: Holly (& Nathan) Nelson of Orange City and Caleb Parks of Bettendorf; a granddaughter, Mackenzie Nelson; his parents: Roger and Dixie Parks of Oskaloosa; his father- and mother-in-law: Gene & Carol Erteld of Oskaloosa; his brothers: Jeff (Christy) Parks of St. Peters, MO and Tony (Michelle) Parks of Oskaloosa; a brother-in-law: Randy (Pam) Erteld of Blue Springs, MO; his wife’s grandmother, Myrtle Fisher of Oskaloosa; and several nieces and nephews.
Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Funeral Services for Scott will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 11, 2014, at Central United Methodist Church with Pastor Dave Brown officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Thursday, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will greet visitors from 4-7 p.m., Thursday evening.
Memorials may be made in his name to the family and will be designated at a later time.
The funeral chapel should be accessed from N. Market ST and E. Glendale Rd. due to Road construction on N. Third ST.
