Popping up at #9 on the 2013-2014 stories list is William Penn’s continued commitment to the NAIA’s Champions of Character program.

WPU was a perennial member of the now-defunct Five-Star program and is expected to once again be rewarded this coming fall for its hard work during 2013-2014 at either the new gold, silver, or bronze levels. In addition to sportsmanship, respect, responsibility, and integrity, the core value of servant leadership tends to be the most visible on campus and throughout the community as teams eagerly perform service projects to better those around them.

Highlighting the efforts, though, was yet another national award for the navy and gold. The Statesmen women’s golf team gathered the Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team Award for the second time in the last three years. Sandwiched between those honors was the indoor women’s track and field team’s win last year. The full story on the laurel can be found here http://www.statesmenathletics.com/article/5324.php

The University has also done quite well on the individual level, receiving five Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character Region VII or MCC Awards (2005-2008, 2010) and claiming Region VII or MCC Coach of Character honors in 2006, 2007, and 2010.

#9 Performance of the 2013-2014 Year

The #9 individual performance of 2013-2014 comes from the gridiron.

Senior free safety Jacob Batterson was a wrecking ball on October 12 in a 65-0 Midwest League destruction of Waldorf. The game is likely to be the last time the teams will meet in football with William Penn joining the Heart of America Athletic Conference in the fall of 2015 and Waldorf going to the North Star Athletic Association this coming season.

Batterson’s incredible day started with an interception in WPU territory on just the Warriors’ second possession. It set up the Statesmen’s first score of the afternoon.

In the second quarter, the senior blocked a punt deep on WC’s side of the field, prepping the navy and gold for an easy four-yard scoring drive.

His biggest contribution came right after halftime, however, as he took the opening kickoff of the second half at the 15-yard line and blew past the black and purple for an 85-yard kickoff return touchdown. It was the first kickoff return score in almost a year for William Penn.

Oh, and Batterson also tallied four tackles (two solos) in the victory.
