The Oskaloosa Sr. Babe Ruth team celebrates after defeating Twin Cedars on Sunday.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Saturday and Sunday of this last weekend, the Oskaloosa Senior Babe Ruth Team took part in the State Tournament at the Lacey Recreation Complex in Oskaloosa.

In the first game Osky faced Knoxville and Osky was firing on all cylinders as they beat Knoxville 17 to 3. Trent Roose was the pitching and hitting star.

In the winner’s bracket game to go to the finals, Osky faced Twin Cedars and the game lived up to the billing as a nail biter with Osky down 2 to 1 with one out – bottom of the 7th. Mitchell Schaffner lined a game winning hit as he drove in the tying and winning runs. Osky’s pitching continued to be its strong point as Nick Rutledge battled the Sabers.

In the finals Osky faced Twin Cedars again as they came back through the losers bracket. Jesse Van Dalen took the mound and was in total control through 6 innings as Osky had timely hits to lead 3-0 going into the 7th inning, however the ‘never say die’ attitude of the Sabers lead them to tying the score at 3-3. Osky scored the go ahead run and lead 4-3 going into the bottom of the 8th. That’s when Trent Roose showed why he is an all state pitcher as he shut down Twin Cedars and that lead to a huge celebration as Osky won their first State Senior Babe Ruth title after 5 runner up finishes.

The team now moves on the the Regional Tournament in July in Dickinson North Dakota!
