Peoria, Ill.–The Statesmen men’s bowling team put itself in position to win Kegel ISBPA Collegiate Classic for the second time in three years, but came up just a bit short Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn, the 2011 champion, placed eighth out of 25 teams in qualifying with 7,730 pins (six regular games and ten Baker games).

The squad then fired off a strong 429 in the two-game initial knockout round to advance to the semifinals. Unfortunately, the road stopped there as the Statesmen posted a 401 to take fourth place, finishing two pins shy of moving onto the championship round. Wichita State (Kan.) routed St. Ambrose in the final, 427-352, to claim the team crown.

In individual qualifying, Perry Crowell of Midland (Neb.) paced the 171-person field with a six-game average of 232.7 (1,396 pins).

Cameron Foster (Sr., West Jordan, Utah, Business Management) led the way for the navy and gold by placing 15th with a 208.5 average (1,251 pins).

Piet Schaeffer (Sr., Livingston, Scotland, General Mathematics) also managed a top-20 finish, placing 19th at 205.0.

Jacques Kaune (So., Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management), with a 199.2 clip, and Drew Balta (Sr., Walford, Iowa, Education), with a 189.8 average, matched the aforementioned duo by starting all six games.

Brandon Barboza (Jr., Brick, N.J., Sociology) averaged 182.6 pins in five games, while Travis Scott (So., West Saint Paul, Minn., Physical Education) knocked down 181 pins in his lone game.

Next: William Penn is off two weeks before traveling to Davenport and Moline, Ill. on November 9-10 to compete in the ISYL Leatherneck Classic.
