Oskaloosa, Iowa – Scientist and volunteers uncovered yet another mammoth tooth this past weekend. This specimen appears to come from the lower jaw, a first for the dig. Photos of the tooth have been sent off in hopes of helping to identify if this current find matches up with the other specimens found so far.

The new area of the dig “continues to be very productive,” says Dave Brenzel of the Indian Creek Nature Center. “Lots of chunks of large bones, but more broken than on the other side of the pit.”

Brenzel says that preservation of the bones is improving as they go deeper, where the sediment layers stayed wetter.
