University Park Mayor Returns Home From Active Duty

Amy Toubekis (left) and George Toubekis (right) share that first kiss in nearly a year on Saturday just moments after being released from active duty.
Des Moines, Iowa – With the heat rising in the Freedom Center at Camp Dodge, sixty families waited for the return of their loved ones.
University Park Mayor George Toubekis was one of those sixty soldiers returning from active duty, having served 11 months, with the vast majority of that time spent in Afghanistan.
Toubekis and his wife Amy, only feet away during the ceremony, were quickly united in an embrace, with the rest of the family only moments behind.
Toubekis continued to be active in his community while on duty. He often still attended and ran meetings from Afghanistan. He also gained some national attention when he helped to uncover a scandal that potentially saved the American Taxpayer twenty million dollars.
Toubekis also earned a Bronze Star while on duty.
Toubekis called it unreal to finally be home, and is looking forward to catching up with family, friends and neighbors in the coming days and weeks.
