Central crashes boards, rolls to women’s basketball win

ST. BONIFACIUS, MINN.—A solid rebounding performance carried the Central College women’s basketball to a 68-51 win over Crown College (Minn.) Saturday.

The Dutch (2-0) held a 57-24 advantage on the glass and were two rebounds shy of the school record set in 2009 against Grinnell College. Central dominated the offensive boards, 30-9.

“We did a much better job rebounding today,” coach Mike Jacobsma said. “That was the stat of the game. We did a good job limiting Crown to one shot, especially in the second half.”

Central jumped to a 22-10 lead with a run at the 14-minute mark and led 42-25 at the half. The Dutch widened the gap to 20 points in the second half and maintained a 20-point lead throughout. Jacobsma emptied the bench in both halves.

“We put some new faces on the court and got everyone some varsity minutes,” Jacobsma said. “There are always some jitters to overcome in the first few games.”

Guard Kalli Richardson (sophomore, Blairsburg, Iowa/Northeast Hamilton) posted a team-high 15 points, shooting 7-of-9 field goals, and had four assists. Guard Rachel Evans (sophomore, Fort Dodge) and forward Nicole Strasko (senior, Roland, Roland-Story HS) each had 10 points.

“It was good to see three players in double-digits, especially with as many as we played today,” Jacobsma said.

Evans added seven rebounds while guard Jessy Stika (junior, Cresco, Crestwood HS) had a game-high 10.

Jacobsma also noted strong performances from freshmen guards Katie Sunderman (Pella) and Alyssa Henrich (Newell, Newell-Fonda HS). Sunderman had three points, three rebounds and three steals while Henrich had seven points and seven rebounds.

“I thought they really competed and played hard in their first varsity game,” Jacobsma said.

Central outshot Crown 39.4 percent to 36.5, and limited the Storm to 28.6 percent in the second half. But Crown (1-1) forced 22 Dutch turnovers.

“Crown’s a scrappy team and forced us into a lot of turnovers,” Jacobsma said. “Give them credit. We’ve got to play with more composure and handle those traps.”

The Dutch are back on the court Tuesday, facing Blackburn College (Ill.) at 6 p.m. at Carlinville, Ill. The Beavers are 1-0 heading into Saturday’s game against Illinois College.
