President’s Thanksgiving Dessert Buffet and Community Band Concert

William Penn University

Oskaloosa, Iowa – William Penn University President Ann Fields invites you to attend the President’s Thanksgiving Dessert Buffet and Community Concert Band Concert on Monday, November 19 at the George Daily Auditorium. The dessert buffet reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. and a concert performed by the William Penn University/Oskaloosa Community Concert Band will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission into the concert is free and the event is open to the public.

The William Penn University/Community Concert Band will perform under the direction of Professor Scott Cressley. The group consists of Penn students, representing every division of study at the University, as well as community members who are committed to keeping the tradition of band music thriving in Oskaloosa. This tradition dates back to the mid 1800’s.

The program will feature concert band repertoire of various styles and periods. Major works to be presented include Gustav Holsts’ “Second Suite in F for Military Band”, “Folk Dances” by 20th century Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, and the 21st century overture “From Whom All Blessings Flow”, a contemporary setting of an old hymn tune scored by Ed Huckeby. The latter is published by Oskaloosa’s own C. L Barnhouse Publishing. “They’re Playing My Song” will be offered as a tribute to the late Marvin Hamlisch, who passed away earlier this year. A medley of two of The Mama’s & The Papa’s greatest hits, “California Dreamin’” and “Monday, Monday” will also be performed. Spirited marches by Henry Fillmore and Iowa’s own Karl King round out the program. The concert is free to the public.
