Oskaloosa CROP Hunger Walk to be held on October 14th.

Mahaska County CROP Walk

The annual Oskaloosa CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Sunday, October 14th, beginning at the Lacey Sports Complex Football Stadium and ending at Edmundson Park. This purpose of the walk is to help stop hunger and poverty in our community and around the world through self-help initiatives.

Last year the local CROP Hunger Walk raised over $3,200 for local and global hunger relief efforts, and the local team hopes to raise even more this year.

This year Oskaloosa and some 2,000 cities and towns nationwide are joining together in interfaith community CROP Hunger Walks around the theme “Ending hunger one step at a time.” A portion of the proceeds goes to support the hunger relief program of Church World Service (CWS), an international organization that seeks to eradicate hunger and poverty and promote peace and justice among the world’s most vulnerable people.

Haiti is one part of the world where CROP Hunger Walks are making a big difference. In the aftermath of the killer earthquake, Church World Service was there with much-needed emergency assistance. With the recovery effort in full swing, CWS is helping families and communities to rebuild homes, food supplies and livelihoods.

The other portion of the proceeds stays locally to support the efforts of the Ecumenical Cupboard, which has served the needs of people in Oskaloosa since 1983. In August of this year alone the Ecumenical Cupboard gave food to 699 different people in Mahaska County, including 60 families seeking help for the first time. Funds raised from the CROP Walk will go towards purchasing food to help ensure the Cupboard can keep pace with ever increasing needs.

Registration begins at 1pm on October 14th at the Lacey Sports Complex Football Stadium, with the walk beginning at 1:30pm. Shuttle service is available between the park and the stadium after the walk.

Those interested in raising support and walking in the Oskaloosa CROP Hunger Walk can contact Andy Baker at the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa (673-3843) for more information.
