Beacon Voters Approve Franchise Agreement

Voters went to the ballet box in Beacon on Tuesday

Beacon, Iowa – Voters in Beacon headed to the ballot box on Tuesday to decide if they believed that allowing Mahaska Rural Water to provide water and sewer service was a better option than the current city-run arrangement.

In an open letter to voters, Beacon Mayor Shawn Maxwell stated, “Mahaska Rural Water System, Inc. has the ability to perform all services and needs related to sewer and water.” Maxwell further explained, “DNR regulations continue to be a concern as they become more stringent. Mahaska Rural Water System, Inc. has resources to obtain non-payable grants that help Cities maintain compliance.”

Unofficially, in the end, 67 voters cast their ballots with 43 votes in favor and 24 against.

The vote will be certified on Monday, August 13th, at a special session of the County Board of Supervisors.
