GRINNELL’S COLE, CAIN AND RITTER NAMED ITA ACADEMIC SCHOLAR-ATHLETES
GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College’s Michael Cole ’12 (left), Toby Cain ’12 (center) and Eric Ritter ‘12 (right) have been named Academic Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
To earn the honor, a player must have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, be a varsity letter winner and be enrolled at his or her present school for at least two semesters.
Cole teamed up with Elliott Czarnecki ’15 to win the No. 1 doubles title at the 2012 Midwest Conference Championships. The duo combined for a 17-15 mark this season as Cole won his second career MWC doubles crown. Cole went 11-4 in singles play.
Ritter, a two-time MWC singles champion, went 14-9 this past season. He and Cole guided the Pioneers to a 24-7 record, the second-most wins in school history, and a ninth consecutive MWC team title. Grinnell also won its 12th consecutive MWC South Division title and extended its winning streak in divisional play to 47 matches.
Cain claimed the No. 6 singles title and No. 3 doubles title with Shirlene Luk ’15 at last year’s MWC Championships. Her performances helped Grinnell to its third MWC team title in a row and a 19-4 record, the second-most wins in school history. Additionally, Grinnell won its ninth MWC South title in a row while extending its winning streak in divisional play to 37.
Cain went 13-6 in singles as a senior and posted a 9-1 doubles mark with Luk.
