Committee Promotes Safety at the New Oskaloosa Urban Park

An urban park user is about to take a hard landing while not wearing any protective gear, especially a helmet.
The new BMX bike and skate park located in the the Oskaloosa Urban Park continues to see tremendous use since its opening May 6th, prompting the skate park committee to gather in the mall Thursday to discuss safety and usage. Helmets were one topic of conversation and how to promote wearing them.
The Tony Hawk Foundation donated twelve skate and BMX helmets that were given away at the grand opening to help encourage usage. The Tony Hawk Foundation and Mahaska County Community Foundation also granted $10,000 each to the parks development the committee strives to insure its safety. The groups will continue to assess well into the future.
Committee leaders have begun to purchase and wear helmets at the park. MCRF has posted a helmets recommended sign and will assist with helmet purchases as needed. “I am very proud of the youth committee members,” stated Sherry Vavra, Executive Director of MCRF. “They truly have buy-in for the park and want to promote positive experiences for those who use it. They have been a large part of the project and continue to be leaders among their peers” she finished. With the park being as popular and well used, safety remains a priority.
