Kenneth Dean Den Hartog
Kenneth “Kenny” Dean Den Hartog, 73, of Oskaloosa died Thursday, May 17, 2012, at the Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa after a very courageous battle with cancer. He was born Tuesday, October 25, 1938 in Oskaloosa the son of John and Ella Lobberecht Den Hartog. Kenny graduated from the Eddyville High School with the class of 1957. On July 17, 1957 he was united in marriage to Alberta Holub in Lancaster, Missouri. Early on he worked at Holub’s Greenhouse and later was a partner with Den Hartog Bros. Meat and Farms. In the early 80’s he opened Ken’s Tools and Furniture and worked there until he recently became ill. Ken had a lifelong love of horses. He owned, raised, and bred quarter horses for over 50 years. He trained and rode cutting quarter horses, a passion that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He also raised registered Santa Gertudis and Charolais cattle for many years. He enjoyed collecting bits and spurs and loved antiques and going to auctions. Enjoyed spending time in his shop and getting the opportunity to visit with people. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, Iowa Quarter Horse Association, National Cutting Horse Association, Iowa Cutting Horse Association, Paint Horse Association, and the Iowa Cattleman’s Association.
His family includes his wife of over 54 years: Alberta Den Hartog of Oskaloosa; two daughters: Linda Selby and Deb Philpot both of Oskaloosa; 6 grandchildren: Clarissa (& Todd) Reitzler, Nicole (& Bill) Louderback, Krystal (& Todd Phillips) Selby, Mandy (& Scott) Hudnut; Matt (& Astin) Lisk and Brooke Lisk; 7 great grandchildren; and a sister: Helen Maloy of Oskaloosa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law: Dennis Selby; and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 10 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Tom Boomershine officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 1 P.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present from 6 – 8 P.M. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Kenny Den Hartog Memorial Fund.
