City Council hears report on city street repairs

Oskaloosa Iowa City Council Chambers

At Monday night’s city council meeting, the city council heard a report from city engineer Akhilesh Pal regarding how the city is fixing pot holes. Pal reported that the city is currently replacing these holes on a complaint driven basis. He reported that residents either call or e-mail the city manager to report a pot hole. Depending on the urgency, a pot hole may be fixed in the very same day. Pal also reported on the overall patching efforts. He reported that the city currently uses two different ways to patch holes, hot and cold patches. He reported that while hot patches may be cheaper, they are used less because the material has to be obtained by driving to Ottumwa and must also be used within the same day. Cold patches are the way the city is using because the city is able to keep that material on hand. He also went on to say that it takes 2 people to fill in each pot hole and that each pot hole costs approximately $5 to repair. In other action, the city council:

  • Approved the appointments of Joe Caligiuri and Glendy Booy to the Enterprise Zone Commission
  • Approved a resolution levying a special assessment against home owners for weed cutting
  • Approved the final plat for the new Morris Subdivision
  • Approved a resolution to approve an application from General Environmental Companies
