New Clerk Of Court Takes Oath Of Office

8th Judicial District Chief Judge, James Blomgren shakes Teresa Augustine's hand after swearing her in as the new Mahaska County Clerk of Court

Oskaloosa, Iowa – It’s one of those little known or seen jobs that makes a big impact in a community. On Thursday, Chief Judge James Blomgren swore in new Mahaska County Clerk of Court Teresa Augustine.

Augustine, who served under former Clerk of Court Mary Sexton for over 13 years stepped into the role upon Mary’s retirement in December and was appointed by the judges in the 8th Judicial District.

I asked Augustine what the clerk of court’s job is, “The keeper of the court records and the court files.”

“I’ve always had some interest in legal… and the law,” and with that Augustine applied and then started working under Sexton. “I have really enjoyed my job here. When she retired it was an opportunity to take up a bigger role.”

“Every day is a new challenge, there seems to be a lot of interesting things that come through. I just look forward to learning something new every day.”

“We have a tremendous tradition of great clerking in Mahaska County. Most of you know who I am referring to, Mary Sexton. Teresa has great shoes to fill, there is absolutely no doubt in this judges mind, in Judge Blomgren, any other people in the court house that she will fill those shoes to the fullest extent she is able.” Was the words shared by Judge Randy DeGeest at the ceremony. “We are extremely fortunate and lucky to have her,” Judge DeGeest stated.

“I knew I had big shoes to fill, but I don’t think you really realize it until you start doing it,” Augustine said just before Judge Blomgren started the ceremonial swearing in.

Augustine had been officially sworn in at an earlier time in order to perform her duties, but this ceremony was performed so friends, family and co-workers could enjoy the moment with her.
