2012 Iowa Legislative Session Started Monday

Under Iowa's Golden Dome, the Iowa Legislature kicked off it's 2012 session Monday

Des Moines, Iowa – At a time that Iowans are use to seeing more snow on the ground and the heat coming from the golden dome, the 2012 Iowa Legislature came to life in Des Moines Monday.

The Iowa House was set to convene at 10:00 am, and by 10:01 they were in session with a prayer offered by Pastor Darin Whiting of Liberty Baptist Church in Marion. Whiting is also a volunteer Chaplin for the Iowa State Patrol.

In the normal start for a legislative session and in preparation for the Condition of the State address to be presented by Governor Brandstad Tuesday to a joint session of the House and Senate.

The Introduction of Bills HF 2001 – HF 2008, and the House started with HCR 101 by Paulsen and McCarthy that invited the Governor to a joint session for the Condition of the State. HCR 101 was adopted.

A Unanimous consent requested for immediate consideration of HCR 102 by Paulsen and McCarthy to invite the Chief Justice to joint session for a Condition of the Judiciary. HCR 102 was adopted.

A Unanimous consent requested for immediate consideration of HCR 103 by Paulsen and McCarthy to invite the Adjutant General to joint session for a Condition of the Iowa National Guard. HCR 103 was adopted.

The House adjourned at 10:43. They will reconvene Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 8:30 a.m.

For those unable to be at the Condition of the State address, Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds will take Condition of the State address to Iowa communities.

(DES MOINES) – Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds today announced that they will be embarking on a tour across Iowa to share the governor’s Condition of the State address with Iowans in their local communities. The tour is set to begin Wednesday, January 11, 2012, the day after the speech is delivered to a joint session of the Legislature.

“For years the governor has delivered the Condition of the State address to the Legislature in Des Moines,” said Branstad. “This year, Lieutenant Governor Reynolds and I will be traveling the state to expand our commitment to Iowans and share our vision for economic health and world-class education.”

“As the 2012 legislative session begins, Governor Branstad and I know that Iowans deserve common sense, long-term solutions that reflect the character and ideals of Iowa’s hard-working taxpayers,” said Reynolds. “We look forward to bringing the Condition of the State address to the people of Iowa over the next couple of weeks.”

The tour begins in Ottumwa, and will continue to Sioux City and Cedar Rapids in the first week. More stops will be released at a later date.

The first stop on the tour will be in Ottumwa on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 1 p.m. where they will hold Wapello County “2012: A Plan of Action” event at the Indian Hills Community College, Advance Technologies Center, 525 Grandview Avenue, Ottumwa, Iowa.
