Jerry Lee Atchison, 70, of Oskaloosa died Saturday, November 26, 2011, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Emergency Room in Oskaloosa. He was born on Tuesday, July 1, 1941, at Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of David and Beulah “Bert” Flemming Atchison. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1959.
Following school he enlisted in the US Army. Following his discharge he drove semi for a short time and then went to work road construction until the early 1980’s when ill health forced his retirement. On March 26, 1966, he was married to Nancy Eaton at Eddyville and they later divorced. On June 22, 1979, he was united in marriage to Debra Whitlatch in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed fishing, camping, watching T.V., playing games and going to dances at the Eagles. He also enjoyed coffeetime with his friends and delighted in spending time with his family. He was a member of the Eagles.
He is survived by his wife: Debra Atchison of Oskaloosa; 5 daughters: Christina (& Layton) Bond of Eddyville, Kim Ripperberger of Lacona, April (& Jamie) McKim of Albia, Lisa (& Alfonso) Reid, and Shelia “Joe” (& Christopher) Talli all of Oskaloosa; two sons: Calvin (& Peggy) Atchison of Albia and Tony (& Brenda) Atchison of Albia; a sister: Betty (& Ray) Nitzchke of Florida; two brothers: Jack Atchison of Macon, Georgia and Richard (& Beverly) Atchison of Pella; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Ruth Shipp and Donna Amber; a brother: Charles Atchison and a brother-in-law: Elmo Shipp.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. As was his wish his body will be cremated following the service and no burial is planned at this time. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 2 p.m. and the family will be present from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Jerry Atchison memorial fund.
