1970: An early season snow storm struck far western and northwestern Iowa on October 8-9, with Sioux City reporting 5.1 inches which is their earliest ever accumulation of one inch or more of snow and their third-highest October snowfall on record. Other snowfall amounts across the area included 3.0 inches at Shenandoah, 4.0 inches at Logan and Rock Rapids, 4.5 inches at Sheldon, 5.0 inches at Castana and Le Mars, 6.0 inches at Onawa, and an amazing 9.0 inches at Hawarden which is the highest accumulation on record in Iowa for so early in the season. Over the rest of Iowa the storm system produced heavy rain with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches at most stations. Several locations in northeastern Iowa experienced their wettest October day on record on the 9th including Osage at 2.67 inches, Charles City at 3.22 inches, and New Hampton at 4.20 inches.
