The William Penn University Concert Band will present its Fall Concert on Monday, November 21

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The William Penn University Concert Band will present its Fall Concert on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the George Daily Community Auditorium. Immediately preceding the concert will be the President’s Holiday Dessert Buffet held at the George Daily Auditorium from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to come enjoy a night of sweet treats and smooth sounds.
The band, under the direction of Professor Scott A. Cressley, is comprised of student musicians from William Penn and members of the Oskaloosa Municipal Band. Students in the concert band represent 10 different academic majors, including Music Education. Musicians range in age from 18 to over 70. The WPU Concert Band is a model for adult mentoring as well as lifelong learning and participation in the arts.
The band will perform a variety of works from the standard concert literature as well performances by the WPU Trumpet Quartet and the William Penn Singers. Selections to be performed include John Philip Sousa’s rousing march “The Fairest of the Fair” and the “Repasz Band March” composed by Harry J. Lincoln. The band’s trumpet section will be featured in the Louis Scarmolin composition “Three Swingsters”. The William Penn Singers, under the direction of Professor Anita Meinert, will join the band in a Mark Hayes arrangement of “Long Ago and Far Away”.
Oskaloosa boasts a rich heritage of band music. The C. L. Barnhouse Co., music publishers since 1886, has created and contributed much to this tradition. Two compositions from Barnhouse will also be featured on the concert. In 2000, C. L. Barnhouse published the dynamic concert overture “Dominion of the Sky: The Awakening of Apollo” by David Shaffer. “Big Band Cavalcade”, arranged by Oskaloosa’s own Andy Clark, will take the audience back to the singing times of the 1930’s and 1940’s.
Also included in the program is a performance by the William Penn University Trumpet Quartet. The members of the quartet are Drew Balta, C. J. Howard, David Carlson and Ryan Poe. They will perform “What Is Love”, arranged by sophomore Music Education major Drew Balta.
The Music Department of William Penn University hosts many performing ensembles, including the concert band, marching band, pep band, jazz ensemble, concert choir, chamber choir and various smaller ensembles. The department welcomes students from all majors to experience the joy of the musical arts along with those students majoring in Music Education; a program that was re-established in 2009 and is growing rapidly. Ensembles are under the direction of Professors Scott Cressley, Anita Meinert, Terry DeJong and graduate assistant C. J. Howard.
