George Shook

George E. Shook, Jr., 61, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, November 10, 2011, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. He was born July 5, 1950, at Grinnell, Iowa, the son of George E. and Martha M. Hughes Shook, Sr. He entered the United States Army in 1968, served 3 tours in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1971. On June 23, 1973, he was united in marriage to Linda K. Quail at Sac City, Iowa. Early in life he worked construction doing stucco work. He also worked at Clow Valve for a short time. In 1975, he began working at Rolscreen now Pella Corporation in Pella. He retired from there in 2005 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Open Bible Church in Oskaloosa. He also belonged to the American Legion Post #34 and V.F.W. Post #2237. He enjoyed collecting and dealing in coins, hunting, fishing, Antiques, and gardening. He was a very talented cook and baker, a skill he loved to show off to his entire family at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He delighted in spending time with his family.

His family includes his wife, Linda Shook of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband: Heidi and Ed Beller of Knoxville; six grandchildren: Dylan Hartley, Michael Beller, Matthew Hartley, Kristopher Beller, Lilijana Hartley, and Samantha Beller; four sisters and their husbands: Connie and Bob Wheeler of Des Moines, Bonnie and Donnie Otto of Des Moines, Marcella and Thomas Houge of Garden Grove, Iowa, and Margaret and Bruce Carl of Alaska; three brothers: John (& Elida) Shook of Washington, Jerry Shook of Grinnell, and Jim (& Nancy) Shook of Pella; and four ½ sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; and a daughter: Laura Jean Shook.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 14, 2011 at 9 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Dwayne Poe officiating. Burial will be in the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery at Van Meter at 12:30 p.m. on Monday. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Sunday morning after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Sunday from 2—4 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the George Shook, Jr. Memorial Fund.
