Surrounded by his family, Oren passed away Thursday evening at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 12 days.

Oren Hershall Scott, the son of John Michael and Rebecca Jane Ver Ploeg Scott, was born June 8, 1929 in Oskaloosa. The family lived on a farm in Jefferson Township; the youngest of nine children Oren learned farming at a young age. He was a 1948 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and after finishing his education, he helped on the family farm. September 14, 1951, Oren entered the Army and was sent to post war Germany, there he operated large equipment and assisted in the reconstruction. He was discharged August 21, 1953 at Fort Sheridan, IL. Oren returned to Oskaloosa, where he farmed with his parents. June 12, 1955, Oren married the love of his life, Virginia Ann West in Minburn, Iowa. They made their home in Jefferson Township as well, where they raised their family and Oren farmed his entire life. As Oren got older, he turned much of the farming over to his sons, but continued to “monitor” their work. One of Oren’s greatest joys was working with his grandsons and sharing his knowledge of farming with them. Oren loved operating equipment and a favorite pastime was participating in and assisting with tractor pulls. His passion was always his farm and the land. He had great pride in his national heritage as well as his local neighborhood and he appreciated and respected his neighbors and friends. Spending time with his family was always his first priority and he also enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating. He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W. and N.R.A.

Oren’s family includes his wife, Virginia of Oskaloosa; his children: Kenneth and Tammy Scott of Oskaloosa, Ray & Judy Scott of Marion, Barbara and Alan DeBruin of Oskaloosa and Greg and Colette Scott of Oskaloosa; ten grandchildren: Justin Scott, Brandon Scott, Aron (Danielle) Scott, Amber and Allison Scott, Chelsey DeBruin, Brett (Amber) DeBruin, Adam DeBruin, Nick Scott, and Heather Scott; two great grandchildren: Karlyn and Gabriel Scott; and a brother, Harold Scott of Oskaloosa.

Besides his parents, Oren was preceded in death by four sisters: Lavon Brown, Marie Littlejohn, Florence Sloan and Fern Littlejohn; and three brothers: Homer Scott, Herman Scott and John Scott.

Memorial contributions may be made to Coal Creek Cemetery.
