Oskaloosa, Iowa – October 23 through October 31, 2011 is National Red Ribbon Week. The Red Ribbon symbolizes a commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. No use of any illegal drugs and no illegal use of legal drugs.
The purpose of this Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment toward the creation of a drug-free America. The national campaign was originated when Federal Agen Enrique Camarena was killed by drug traffickers in Mexico in 1985. Groups of parents began wearing the small badge of red satin to show their support of drug-free youth and encourage others to take a stand against drugs. In 1989, the Red Ribbon became the united symbol to eliminate the demand for drugs and show a nation’s intolerance to an America where alcohol and drugs erode the potential of our youth.
The Oskaloosa Police Department is asking area residents and businesses to join in celebrating as a community by wearing and displaying red ribbons. Businesses can have employees wear a red ribbon and display red ribbons in their store front. Citizens can participate by displaying red ribbons on front doors, mailboxes, trees, car door handles or antennas or simply by wearing a red ribbon.
Red Ribbon Week is just one way for our community to unite in the fight against drugs and to create a drug free America. The Oskaloosa Police Department and it’s officers will be participating by displaying red ribbons on their patrol vehicles and each officer will be wearing a red ribbon showing their community sommitment for a drug-free city.
