Ada Johnson

Montezuma. Ada Johnson, 89 of Montezuma passed away Monday, August 15, 2011 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. Memorial services will begin at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. No visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Grinnell Calvary Baptist Church 1625 Penrose St. Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Friends may sign the online guestbook at www.hollandcoblefuneralhome.com. Ada Revell Johnson, daughter of Robert and Ethel May (Hulbert) Revell was born on February 24, 1922 in Iowa Center, Iowa. She graduated from Grinnell High School on May 29, 1941. On September 25, 1945, Ada was united in marriage to Raymond “Swede” Johnson in Osceola, Nebraska. To this union six children were born. Ada worked at Maytag Defense Plant in Newton, Iowa during the war, where they made airplane motor parts. After the war, she worked at Lynches Variety Store where she was a clerk and supervisor. After her children were born, Ada stayed home and raised them, helping in the store and locker plant whenever needed. She was a den mother while her sons where in Cub Scouts. In her free time, Ada loved working crossword puzzles and sewing for her little girl. She made 17 ugly quilts for the homeless. She was a member of the Regular Baptist Church, the Ladies Missionary Groups, VFW and 50 Plus Club in New Sharon. Ada cared for Raymond during his 20 years of illness, she loved working in her vegetable garden and most of all spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ada is survived by her five children, Marion (Marsha) Johnson of Garner, Iowa, Mike (Debbie) Johnson of Springfield, Illinois, Keith (Karen) Johnson of Meservey, Iowa, Rex (Candy) Johnson of Leland, Iowa and Benae Johnson of Montezuma; seven grandchildren, Nichelle (Jason) Kendell, Michelle (Brad) Davis, Sue (Jeff) Petty, Stacia (Brian) Gordon, Phillip (Jill) Johnson, Kyle Johnson and Ken (Jill) Johnson; 12 great grandchildren and one sister, Ethel Taylor of Brooklyn.

Ada is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond “Swede” Johnson; an infant daughter, Carol Beth Johnson; three infant grandchildren; Wesley, Scott and Denise; a brother, Robert Revell and a sister, Velma James and a daughter-in-law, Juanita Johnson.
