OHS Student Council lends a helping hand
Oskaloosa, Iowa- The Oskaloosa High School Student Council was hard at work early today. This morning at 8:00 AM, around 25 students gathered at the Old Wal-Mart building to take part in their annual highway clean up event. The Student Council, an organization with around 60 members each year, has participated in the adopt a highway program for several years now. As a part of the program, the council walks along a two mile stretch of Highway 23 southeast of Oskaloosa, and collects all the trash that they see.
This year was no different with several groups of students seen walking within the ditches of highway 23, wearing fluorescent green vests with orange garbage bags in hand. The event is mandatory for all Student Council members elected in the Spring Elections. Council members are known to find interesting things within the ditches. In the past, items like trikes, car seats, and tires have all been found. After the two mile stretch is cleaned up, the garbage bags are placed under an Adopt A Highway sign for the DOT to pick up.
After highway clean up today, I had a chance to catch up with Junior Robert Leonard. Leonard is the President of the 2011-2012 OHS Student Council. Leonard stated his thoughts on the 2011-2012 Student Council. “This year’s student council will be good. We have a lot of good leaders on the council. We have a lot of good, quality walk ons. I think it won’t be a problem getting the students involved in the community and I think overall, we’re going to have a great year.”
