Local Church Reaches Out With Tsunami Benefit

Traditional Japanese music could be heard at a recent fundraiser held by Central United Methodist Church
A ladies group at Central United Methodist Church spearheaded the fundraiser last Thursday evening.
There are several Japanese parishioners at the church, with them helping to bring a touch of Japan to the evening. There was also live performances with a quartet of stringed instruments, a Japanese guitar. Origami was being taught at one table also during the evening.
A silent auction took place with items donated from local businesses and persons.
“We decided back in March we wanted to do a benefit to aid the victims of the tsunami in Japan.” said Lisa Vohoska who helped to coordinate the entire evening.
“We had originally talked about doing a Japanese dinner” Vohoska said of the dinner choices. But after consulting their Japanese friends, they decided on a more traditional route as much of a Japanese dinner would have to be done at the last minute.
The dinner consisted of ham balls, green bean, mashed potatoes and sushi. Ice tea and ice water along with green tea cookies.
