Donald C. Jones, 88, of Grinnell died on June 13, 2011, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 17, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Pallbearers will be Delmar Ford, Don Jones, Roger Roland, Ron Van Berkum, Dick Vogt and Jesse Watt. Burial will be in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home and with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Donald C. Jones Memorial Fund.
Donald was born on September 26, 1922, in Malcom, the son of H.C. “Cliff” and Elverna Owen Jones. He later moved to the Kellogg area and was a 1941 graduate of Kellogg High School. Following his education he began his farming career in Poweshiek County. He loved his life on the farm and took great pride in raising his cattle. He retired in 1996.
On May 17, 1996, he was united in marriage to Gylena Johnson Pickhardt, in Grinnell and where the couple made their home. Most recently, he had been a resident at Windsor Manor in Grinnell.
Donald enjoyed dancing, listening to country music, and flower gardening. He was an avid reader and also enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Gylena of Grinnell; one brother, James (Ruth) Jones of Ames; two nephews, Ron (Georgina) Jones of Melbourne, Australia and Don (Simona) Jones of Austin, Texas; two step-children, Wanda (Randy) Stoner of Des Moines and Lowell (Susie) Pickhardt of Malcom; and two step-grandchildren, Jesse Watt of Montezuma and Jessica (Alexis) Orfanos of West Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents.
