Question of the Week: Do you support late term abortions?
Last week we asked residents if you were worried about the continued rising costs of food and gas? 67 residents responded with 60 residents (90%) saying Yes, 5 residents (7%) saying No, and 2 residents (3%) saying Unsure. The question of the week poll is unscientific and does not reflect the views of Osky News.
Recently, the Iowa House passed a measure blocking “late term” abortions. “Late term” abortions are abortions for pregnancies that are over 20 weeks. The Iowa Senate is to take up the debate, if Senator Gronstal allows the debate to be heard on the floor of the Senate. Currently Iowa law allows abortions to happen until the 24th week if a doctor believes that the procedure will help save the life or preserve the health of the woman.
This issue has come to the forefront in Iowa as Nebraska Doctor LeRoy Carhart is looking to open a clinic in Council Bluffs providing late term abortions to women. Nebraska recently passed a law prohibiting abortions beyond 20 weeks, so Carhart is looking for a new place to practice.
So, our question this week is an explosive one for many people, and is always full of debate on both sides of the aisle.
Late term abortion as defined by Wikipedia, “The point at which an abortion becomes late-term is often related to the “viability” (ability to survive outside the uterus) of the fetus. Sometimes late-term abortions are referred to as post-viability abortions. However, viability varies greatly among pregnancies. Nearly all pregnancies are viable after the 27th week, and no pregnancies are viable before the 21st week. Everything in between is a “grey area”.”
Now it’s your turn to decide. Vote in our online poll. The poll will be open until 9 pm next Sunday when we will close the poll and release the final voting numbers. If you have any questions or concerns, please visit us on our Facebook Page or e-mail us at info@oskynews.org.
