Central second in Buena Vista men’s golf tourney
STORM LAKE—With three players in the top 10, the Central College men’s golf team finished second in the 25-team Buena Vista Spring Invitational Saturday.
Sophomore Justin Livingston (Winterset) tied for third to lead the Dutch at 71-74—145. Alex Huyser (senior, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS) and Jason Harvey (senior, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) tied for seventh, both at 75-74—149.
Nebraska Wesleyan University captured the team title at 299-291—590. Central’s second unit, the White team, shot 314-304—618 to finish fifth. Wartburg College was third (311-292—603) and the Univ. of Dubuque was fourth (315-302—617).
“We played well but we didn’t play well enough to win,” coach Chad Green said. “We got beat—we didn’t lose. I’m proud of Livingston, Huyser and Harvey to finish in the top 10 and I thought our white team came around and shot well too.”
Rounding out the varsity squad, Matt Vegter (junior, Morrison, Ill.) shot 78-81—159 and Drew Osier (sophomore, Austin, Minn.) carded 85-75—160.
For the White squad, Brent Goodenow (junior, Johnston) tied for 12th at 80-72—152 and Brent Messmore (junior, Hudson) tied for 18th at 77-76—153. Will Overlander (junior, Argyle, Texas) shot 77-81—158, Travis Havens (junior, Belmond, Belmond-Klemme HS) had 84-75—159 and Erik Grunder (sophomore, Wilton) shot 80-83—163.
The Dutch return to the Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake next weekend for the first two rounds of the Iowa Conference tournament. The final two rounds will be played April 29-30 in Iowa City.
“We’ve got some things to work on before the conference tournament,” Green said.
But with seven players battling for the top five spots, Green is confident in his squad.
“Livingston, Harvey and Huyser are locked in for the tournament and the rest will qualify for the final two spots this week,” Green said. “We haven’t lost to a league school yet this season, although Wartburg shot well today. They’ll probably be our toughest competition. A player from Dubuque won the tourney today, so they’ll be a solid team too.”
