Rangel Chosen as Second-Team All-American
Oskaloosa–Sean Rangel (So., Omaha, Neb., Bellevue East HS) wrapped up a successful sophomore campaign by being named an NAIA Second-Team All-American.
The NAIA Coaches Association selected a total of ten players for its first and second teams. Marcel Suartz of Webber International (Fla.) garnered Player of the Year accolades.
In 69 games this year, Rangel posted a 209.3 average, including a season-high game of 260. The sophomore placed in the top ten in five separate tournaments, including taking runner-up accolades at the Leatherneck Classic in early December.
Rangel, who topped the Statesmen in six events this year, is ranked 13th in the nation according to collegebowling.com
He is the lone NAIA All-American from the Midwest Collegiate Conference. It is the first A-A award for the men’s bowling program in just its second year of existence.
Eight Bowlers Earn Academic Honor
Oskaloosa–The National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association announced its 2010-2011 Academic All-America Team recently.
Six Statesmen bowlers and two Lady Statesmen rollers were named to the squad, which included nearly 500 collegiate athletes from around the country.
Drew Balta (Fr., Walford, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS), David Carlson (Fr., Clive, Des Moines Christian HS), Kyle Clark (Fr., Oswego, Ill., Yorkville HS), Piet Schaeffer (Fr., Livingston, Scotland, The James Young HS), Mackenzie Van Zante (Fr., Pella, Pella HS), and Dontae Woods (Fr., Des Moines, Des Moines Roosevelt HS) represented the men’s program.
Samantha McCauley (Fr., Mason City, Mason City HS) and Kirstin Newberry (So., Holland, Mich., West Ottawa HS) were recipients on the women’s side.
To be selected to the NCBCA team, a bowler must be a United States Bowling Congress collegiate athlete who has a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 based on a 4.0 scale.
