William Penn Finishes in Top Five at Peru State Event
Parkville, Mo.–The Statesmen women’s golf team saw some improvements as it battled at the Peru State Invitational Friday and Saturday.
WPU placed fourth out of 11 teams with a two-round score of 690 (349-341) at the par-71 Table Creek Golf Course. Morningside earned the team trophy at 614 (306-308).
Kendra Casey (75-77) and Aidan Sander (76-76), both of Morningside, led the 65-player field at 152.
Ashlynn Long (Fr., Reno, Nev., Exercise Science) led the navy and gold in 14th place at 170 (88-82).
“I am starting to see some great things out of Ashlynn,” Head Coach Darin Fisher said. “A top-15 finish and her best collegiate round shows me she is settling in and figuring out she can really compete at this level. She will learn to finish off her rounds, but I am very proud of her effort.”
Amelia Meador (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Kinesiology) was one shot back of her teammate at 171 (88-83) to tie for 15th.
Emma Kipfer (Fr., Albia, Iowa, Business Management), who tied for 17th at 173 (86-87), and Chloe Jacques (So., Chatham, Ontario, Political Science), who finished 20th at 176 (87-89), were in the top 20 as well.
Long, Meador, and Jacques all ended up with two birdies at the meet.
Olivia Quail (So., South Lyon, Mich., Sport Management) wrapped up the team scoring in 39th place at 195 (98-97), while Gabriella Honesto (Jr., Lubbock, Texas, Kinesiology), playing as an individual, tied for 27th at 186 (91-95).
“Gabriella had her collegiate personal best of 91 on Friday with a 39 on her front nine,” Fisher said. “She is a great teammate, and I am very happy for her.”
“Conditions were difficult with a misty rain on the first day and some pretty wet and sloppy conditions the second day,” Fisher said. “The ball-striking by the ladies was pretty good; I would say much improved from our first few events, but we just continue to throw shots away around the greens. It is just hard to win events or finish runner-up against good teams when making those small mistakes. That needs to be an emphasis in practice this week as we prepare for our home meet.”
Next Up: William Penn closes out its fall campaign next Monday and Tuesday by hosting The Statesmen at The Preserve in Moravia, Iowa. Play will be contested at The Preserve Golf Course.
