Central Edges Grinnell in Thrilling Overtime Battle
PELLA, Iowa — In an electrifying overtime clash, the Central College women’s basketball team emerged victorious over Grinnell College, 74-72, on November 13 at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. Both teams entered the game with identical 2-1 records, and the intensity on the court matched their aspirations to solidify their seasons.
Grinnell surged in the third quarter, riding a remarkable 52.9% field-goal shooting effort to take a 10-point lead late in the period. Bailey Strovers spearheaded the Pioneers’ offensive charge, finishing with 14 points, including four crucial three-pointers, while Sara Booher anchored the paint with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Despite Grinnell’s advantage, Central refused to back down. Abby Johnson ignited the Dutch offense, notching a team-high 18 points, bolstered by sharp three-point shooting (4-of-6). CeCe Moore provided crucial energy on both ends, contributing 16 points and securing eight rebounds.
The fourth quarter showcased Central’s resilience as they clawed back from the deficit, fueled by their ability to capitalize on fast breaks and second-chance opportunities. Central’s defense also tightened, holding Grinnell to just 21.4% shooting in the final period of regulation. Central forced turnovers at pivotal moments, turning them into 17 points for the game.
As overtime began, both teams battled ferociously, trading leads in a nail-biting finish. Central’s composure at the free-throw line proved decisive, as they converted 5-of-6 attempts in the extra period compared to Grinnell’s 2-of-2. Central’s 38.6% shooting edged out Grinnell’s 36.9% on the night.
