Central men’s soccer team falls in non-conference match

PELLA- Defender Spencer Taylor (junior, Norwalk) started the scoring early when he took advantage of a defensive miscue scored in the 5th minute, his third goal of the season.

The Central College men’s soccer team (2-4-1) could not score again and ended up losing the match to Greenville University (Ill.) 2-1.

“Overall, I thought it was a much better performance than our last match,” said coach Garry Laidlaw. We knew we had to be better in some areas and I thought the application to some of those things was there. Ultimately, we didn’t make enough of the chances we created and got beat on a counter after being in an advantageous position.”

The Panthers (2-4-1) tied the match after goalkeeper Ronan Murphy (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt) committed a foul leading to a penalty kick, which they converted. The Panthers then went on to score in the 83rd minute to end the scoring.

The squad put six shots on goal and had seven corner kicks but were only able to score one goal.

“We had some good individual performances which gives us encouragement moving forward,” said Laidlaw.

The Dutch return to the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex soccer field Tuesday when it hosts Cornell College at 4:30 p.m. This will be the final non-conference match for the team.
