Grinnell Women’s Soccer Secures First Victory of the Season with Dominant Performance Against Coe
Grinnell, Iowa (September 1, 2024) — The Grinnell College women’s soccer team claimed their first win of the season in commanding fashion, defeating Coe College 3-0 at Springer Field. The victory brought Grinnell’s record to 1-1-0, while Coe fell to 0-1-0 in their season opener.
Grinnell set the tone early, with sophomore forward Maya Mozena opening the scoring in the 11th minute. Mozena’s goal, her first of the season, came off a well-placed assist from Tori Thomas, putting Grinnell ahead 1-0. The Pioneers maintained pressure throughout the first half, doubling their lead in the 33rd minute when Reese Komsthoeft netted an unassisted goal, marking her first of the season.
Despite their efforts, Coe struggled to gain a foothold in the match, failing to register a single shot on goal. Grinnell’s defense, anchored by goalkeeper Peyton Dixon, was impenetrable, with Dixon not needing to make a save to earn the clean sheet.
Grinnell capped off their strong performance with a final goal in the 88th minute. Amelia Duenas, coming off the bench, scored her first collegiate goal with an assist from Julia Marlin, sealing the 3-0 win for the Pioneers.
The statistics underscored Grinnell’s dominance, with the Pioneers outshooting Coe 9-0 and taking seven corner kicks to Coe’s zero. Coe’s goalkeeper Lilly Monroe, despite conceding three goals, made four saves to keep the scoreline from escalating further.
Grinnell will look to build on this momentum as they continue their season, while Coe will seek to bounce back in their next fixture.
