Statesmen Open Las Vegas Trip with 10th-Place Finish at Glenn Carlson

The William Penn men’s bowling team placed in the top 10 as it opened its pre-holiday trip to Nevada at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
Las Vegas, Nev.–The William Penn men’s bowling team placed in the top 10 as it opened its pre-holiday trip to Nevada at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
WPU finished 10th out of 47 teams with 8,534 pins in nine regular games, while SCAD Savannah (Ga.) topped qualifying with 9,636 pins.
Sixteen teams advanced to bracket play with the navy and gold meeting up with #7 seed Calumet-St. Joseph (Ind.) in the first round. Unfortunately, the Statesmen were knocked out in a 3-1 setback (148-204, 181-177, 166-178, 181-200).
#3 seed Wichita State (Kan.) eventually won the crown by dropping #4 seed Webber International (Fla.) 3-0 in the championship bout.
Julian Salinas of SCAD Savannah guided the individual standings with a 225.8 average (2,032 pins).
Conor Fetherston (So., Dublin, Ireland, Software Engineering) was WPU’s top roller with a 193.4 average in nine games (1,741 pins).
Bryce Keykal (Jr., Princeton, Minn., Education) was next at 189.4 in eight games, while Carter Boley (So., Grimes, Iowa, Engineering) averaged 181.1 pins in seven rounds.
Marcus Yamada (Sr., Kenai, Alaska, Business Management) posted the best average for WPU, owning a mark of 206.2 in six games, while Kody Sapp (Sr., Donnelson, Iowa, Industrial Technology) also started six games and had a 185.2 clip.
Aidan Piet (Fr., Meridian, Idaho, Business Management) managed 196.8 pins per game over the span of five rounds, while Spencer Fleming (So., Greensboro, N.C., Business Management) (174.5) and Jared Smith (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, General Accounting) (164.5) both started two games.
William Penn also had a JV team on the lanes, placing second out of 12 teams with 7,788 pins. Caleb Sterbenz (Sr., West Liberty, Iowa, Applied Computer Science) led the reserve grouping with a 194.2 average (1,748 pins).
