Top-ranked Mia Palumbo (Jr., Oak Lawn, Ill., Exercise Science) rolled through the 109-pound weight class for her third title in as many tournaments. The junior finished 4-0 with four technical falls, including defeating Alexsys Jacquez of Saint Mary (Kan.) 14-4 in the finals.
116-pounder Catherine Steinkamp (Jr., Quincy, Ill., Exercise Science) and 130-pounder Devin Patton (So., Plano, Texas, Business Management) also advanced to the championship round, but came up short.
Steinkamp won twice by technical fall, but was upended 5-0 by Shammilka Miranda Diaz of Indian Hills CC for the crown. Patton’s runner-up placing came via three technical fall victories.
Isabelle Hawley (So., Winchester, Calif., Sociology) also placed, taking fifth at 143 pounds. She won a team-best five matches, including four by fall and one by technical fall. The sophomore improved throughout the day, headlined by pinning her fifth-place match opponent after losing to her by one point earlier in the event.
Samantha Ruano (Sr., Romeoville, Ill., Business Management) won three times at 191 pounds, including two falls and one technical fall, while Naida Abdijanovic (So., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) was a three-time winner (two falls) at 143 pounds.
155-pounder Kylee Eastwood (So., Fontana, Kan., Biology) notched two wins (one fall, one technical fall), and 101-pounder Teya Garner (Fr., San Antonio, Texas, Biology) also claimed a victory (by fall).
“This was an overall productive weekend,” Head Coach Jake Kadel said. “I think we had the capability to win at least four weight classes, but came up a little short due to a few minor details. It was a great day for several people, including Teya Garner, Samantha Ruano, and Kylee Eastwood who are seeing improvements and continuing to build confidence for the year.”
Next Up: William Penn will travel to Coralville on December 29-30 to compete in the Soldier Salute. Action begins at 10 a.m.
