Quartet Claim Scholar-Athlete Recognition

Oskaloosa–Four members of the Statesmen men’s bowling team were honored for their excellence in the classroom as they were named 2022-2023 NAIA Men’s Bowling Scholar-Athletes Tuesday.

Jared Smith (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, General Accounting) heads the group with a 3.79 Grade Point Average, while Garraty Richmond (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Digital Communication) was next with a 3.77 GPA.

Bryce Keykal (So., Princeton, Minn., Education), at 3.71, and Caleb Sterbenz (Jr., West Liberty, Iowa, Applied Computer Science), at 3.59, were also recognized.

The award is the second for Smith, Richmond, and Sterbenz, while Keykal is a first-time honoree.

Nearly 125 individuals from the NAIA were lauded with the accolade.

To be eligible for the award, athletes must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, have attended the nominating institution for one full year prior to nomination, and must appear on the sport’s eligibility paperwork.
