Statesmen Close Out USBC Play in Sectional Round
Dallas, Texas–The William Penn men’s bowling team had its streak of national tournament runs ended as it came up short at the USBC Team Sectionals Saturday and Sunday.
WPU finished 14th out of 20 teams with 12,001 pins in 64 Baker games. The top four teams qualified for nationals with Lindenwood (Mo.) leading the way with 13,730 pins.
The placing ends a streak of five consecutive USBC Nationals appearances for the Statesmen, dating back to 2017 (no sectional tournament in 2020 due to COVID).
The navy and gold opened the first 16 games in 14th with 2,977 pins. They unfortunately could never recover, falling to 17th at one point before bouncing back to get to 14th.
Competing team members included Jake Cook (Sr., Keokuk, Iowa, Physical Education), Conor Fetherston (Fr., Dublin, Ireland), Nate Hansen (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska, Industrial Technology), Coleton Jacobson (Jr., West Jordan, Utah, Exercise Science), Bryce Keykal (So., Princeton, Minn., Education), Jayson Miner (Sr., Silvis, Ill., Business Management), Kody Sapp (Jr., Donnelson, Iowa, Sociology), and Jared Smith (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, General Accounting).
“Unfortunately, our run at USBC did not go as we had hoped, but the good news is our season is far from over,” Head Coach Cameron Foster said. “We have a week to work out some kinks we ran into this week and get ourselves ready for NAIA Nationals.”
Next Up: William Penn will travel to Sterling Heights, Mich. March 23-25 to compete in the NAIA National Championship.
