WPU Gains Added Mat Experience at Home Duals
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s wrestling team got in five competitions as it hosted the William Penn Duals Saturday.
WPU (5-8) opened the day with a 28-14 win over Simpson and then defeated Iowa Central CC 22-20 in an exhibition dual. The squad followed with a 32-14 setback against Midland.
The day concluded with a 17-14 exhibition loss to Iowa Western CC and a 19-16 loss to Ottawa (Kan.).
WPU 28, Simpson 14
130-pounder Mariah Webster (Fr., Mingo, Iowa, Elementary Education) and 191-pounder Samantha Ruano (Jr., Romeoville, Ill., Business Management) both won by fall, while technical falls came from Brittany Cotter (So., Katy, Texas, Nursing) and Ashleigh Denny (So., El Paso, Texas, Undecided) at 123 and 136 pounds, respectively.
116-pounder Catherine Steinkamp (So., Quincy, Ill., Biology) and 155-pounder Kaylah Johnson (Fr., Houston, Texas, Biology) collected forfeits as well.
WPU 22, Iowa Central CC 20
Beginning with Steinkamp’s technical fall, WPU won four matches in a row and five of six. Cotter and Webster each pinned their foes, while Denny and Johnson had their hands raised via technical fall as well.
Midland 32, WPU 14
Steinkamp served as the navy and gold’s lone match winner with a tech fall, while Cotter and Ruano picked up points with forfeits.
Iowa Western CC 17, WPU 14
Cotter scored William Penn’s first points with a technical fall, while Webster pinned her third opponent of the day. Denny also won by forfeit.
Ottawa 19, WPU 16
Technical falls from Steinkamp, Cotter, Denny, and Johnson were not enough for the Statesmen in their final dual of the day.
Next Up: William Penn travels to Kansas City, Mo. next Friday to compete in the Avila Duals.
