Statesmen Win William Penn Invitational
Oskaloosa, Iowa– The Statesmen hosted the William Penn Invitational at Oskaloosa Golf Course, where conditions have been the best of the spring season with temperatures in the mid-’50s to low-60s. The tournament was set up with a yardage of 6,503 yards and a par-72 layout, highlighted by the contrast between the traditional front nine and the more spacious back nine.
William Penn took home the team title with a score of 304, helped by Jordan Lester (Grad., Lamoni, Iowa, Sports Management) who took home medalist honors for the first time as a Statesmen by firing a 74, finishing ahead of second place by a single stroke. Lester also tied the field in birdies (4) and par-5 scoring (4.75).
Cameron Johnson (Jr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management) carded a 76 and finished in a tie for third, highlighted by a 35 on the front nine including three birdies. Spencer Tucker (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management) led the field in par-3 scoring (3.0) en route to a tie for fifth placing at 77. Tied with Tucker were Jonathan Jarvis (Jr., Burlington, Iowa, Business Management) and Austin Hafner (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management), who both finished atop a statistical category among the field.
“This is a nice confidence boost,” said Head Coach Steve Tucker. “Our team is making the necessary steps to get ready to peak when we want. With the Battle of Waterloo coming later this week and the conference tournament around the corner, we are looking forward to seeing what this team can do. I am also glad to see Jordan be able to get his first win as a Statesmen and our entire varsity squad place tied for fifth or better!”
Up Next: The Statesmen will travel to Waterloo, Iowa on April 15-16 to compete in the Battle of Waterloo, hosted by Hawkeye CC. This tournament will feature a two-day, 54-hole tournament spread across three golf courses: Irv Warren GC, South Hills GC, and Gates Park GC.
