WPU Shut Down by #7 Indiana Tech

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen men’s lacrosse team was stymied on offense as it fell to #7 Indiana Tech 10-1 in non-conference play Saturday.

In an effort to get ahead of forecasted storms, the game was moved up two hours, but Mother Nature still wreaked havoc, postponing the start more than a half hour with a lightning delay.

When action finally got underway, William Penn (3-2) stood tall defensively, keeping the Warriors (3-1) off the scoreboard for the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately, ITU finally broke the scoreless tie at the 4:40 mark and then tacked on another three minutes later for a 2-0 advantage. The navy and gold were outshot just 12-6 through the first period, but that margin grew as the contest continued.

The visitors doubled their advantage to 4-0 by halftime, including scoring with only 22 seconds until the break. Of equal significance, WPU was limited to only two shots in the second stanza.

The Warriors officially pulled away with four more unanswered tallies in the third quarter and then finished their scoring with two in the final 15 minutes.

Boston Romero (So., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management) ensured his team would not be shut out for the first time in program history, finding the netting unassisted with 2:53 left in regulation. Overall, the Statesmen were outshot 45-23 with 12 attempts in the last quarter. Romero topped the hosts with nine tries.

Jeremy Smith (Sr., Camano Island, Wash., Sociology) sought to keep William Penn close as he managed 17 saves in the loss.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Davenport next Wednesday to face #3 St. Ambrose in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play at 5 p.m.
