Statesmen Finish Runner-Up at Glenn Carlson Invitational
Las Vegas, Nev.–Led by a first place overall individual performance from Gabi Evans (Jr., West Liberty, Iowa, Psychology and Sociology), the William Penn women’s bowling team finished second among 31 teams at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational. The runner-up finish is the program’s highest ever finish at the Glenn Carlson Invitational.
Beginning the tournament with her high game of 269, Evans kept up the pace across her remaining eight games to finish with a tournament-high 1,912 pins, good for an average game of 212. The top finish for Evans is the first top individual performance of the year for the Statesmen and earned her a spot on the all-tournament team.
Alexis Lake (Jr., Kaysville, Utah, Nursing) was the next highest finisher for William Penn, finishing in 31st with a total count of 1,641. Destiny Rottman (Sr., Coal Valley, Ill., Digital Communication) was close behind, placing 40th after knocking down 1,620 pins.
Madison Ross (Jr., Charles City, Iowa, Exercise Science) also turned in a strong performance, coming in 70th despite not bowling the ninth and final game of the individual rounds. Evie Roen (Sr., Troy, Mich., Applied Mathematics), who only bowled four games, finished with a strong game average of 181.75 for her efforts.
Following the individual games, the Statesmen had given themselves the privilege of the four seed for the championship bracket. Their first challenge came from Midland, who took the opening game of the best of five series. The navy and gold responded back with two wins in a row, but conceded the fourth game to send the first round into a one game playoff. The Statesmen responded to a challenge with a team game of 276, which proved to be more than enough to advance them to the semifinals.
The best of five semifinal round ended up being a best of six, as after Saint Xavier took the opening game, the two teams tied at 166 apiece in game two. Saint Xavier won game three as well, but the Statesmen responded with three consecutive victories to send themselves into the championship round.
The navy and gold once again found themselves down in a 2-0 hole, and responded with a victory in game three. Unfortunately, they could not complete one final comeback, as the University of Tennessee Southern claimed the tournament victory.
What’s Next: The Statesmen had the quickest of turnarounds and are participating in the Las Vegas Collegiate Shoot-Out. The tournament will conclude tomorrow.
